Vocoder 'a way of listening to the future'

Ever wondered what a vocoder is?

It's a sound distorter originally invented during World War II to protect secret phone conversations between Churchill and Roosevelt and went on to become a favourite of rock artists.

Dave Tompkins, thought by some to be the world's leading hip hop writer, explains his love for the vocoder.
