If a doctor or nurse deliberately neglects a patient in England they can only be prosecuted if the patient is mentally ill or if they die.
Medical ethicists writing in the Journal of Medical Ethics today say that the government should create a criminal offence of wilful neglect to hold healthcare professionals to account.
The call comes in light of scandals over care such as that at Mid Staffordshire Hospital. Debating the issue is Professor Margaret Brazier, one of the authors of the article and Hamish Meldrum is chairman of the British Medical Association.
