Stephen Hawking has declared that religion and philosophy are no longer necessary to explain the universe.

"Philosophers have not kept up with modern developments in physics and biology. As a result, their discussions seem increasingly outdated and irrelevant," he told the programme.

"God is unnecessary, science can explain the universe without the need for a creator".

Professor of synaptic pharmacology Baroness Greenfield and philosopher Professor AC Grayling discuss whether science has now replaced other forms of human enquiry.
