Mackerras 'a giant and polymath'

Conductor Sir Charles Mackerras has died at the age of 84.

He had many strings to his bow, as a noted authority on Mozart's operas and conducting interests ranging from eastern European composers like Bartok to remarkably fresh interpretations of Gilbert and Sullivan's operettas.

Sir Charles's agent, Robert Rattray, reflects on the maestro's life.
