Smartphone costs 'set to rise'

The iPhone and and other smartphones have been a big success partly because users pay a single monthly fee and then they can surf the internet all they want.

That tariff was key to helping smartphones take off because it meant customers didn't have to worry about running up big bills when they surfed the net.

Now the phone provider 02 has said that from today, new customers and anyone renewing their contract on the O2 network will have a limit on how much data they can download before they have to start paying extra fees.

No one from 02 was willing to come on the programme but we are joined by Charlotte Patrick, a telecoms analyst at Gartner, examines the move.
