Labour MP Diane Abbott has announced on the Today programme that she will stand as a candidate in the Labour leadership contest.

"So many people have asked me to put my hat in the ring and I have finally agreed to do so," she told Today presenter James Naughtie.

She commented that her nomination would "broaden the debate" and "reflect the modern Labour party".

CLARIFICATION: In her interview, Ms Abbott suggested that leadership contender John McDonnell MP had conceded that he was unable to win the 33 votes required to be nominated. The Today programme would like to clarify that John McDonnell MP is still a contender and has not conceded.
