Church 'palpable in trying to stop scandal'

The Vatican is refusing to comment on a letter written by the Pope in 1985, which appears to show that he opposed the defrocking of an American priest known to have abused children.

The Pope's spokesman says the letter has been taken out of context.

Religious affairs correspondent Robert Pigott outlines the letter's contents, and Catherine Pepinster, editor of the Tablet, comments on the latest allegations.
