A double bomb blast in two locations on the Moscow metro has killed up to 40 people.

Unconfirmed reports from the city's mayor suggest the attacks were carried out by female suicide bombers.

Konstantin Kosachev, head of the Russian parliament's foreign affairs committee, said that if this was confirmed, it suggested the attacks were perpetrated by insurgents from the northern Caucasus, where Russia has been engaged with Islamist rebels fighting for independence in Chechnya.
