The Shadow Chancellor has said that unless the government comes up with a credible plan for dealing with the UK's debt, there is a real threat that the UK's credit rating will be downgraded.

George Osborne told the Today programme that the Conservatives would be asking for a mandate from the electorate to tackle the deficit and get the economy moving.

Pressed on the actual substance of Conservative economic policy, Mr Osborne refused to give details, but assured presenter Evan Davis that "people will know what they are voting for" when the election comes.
