Controversy over estuary barriers

Plans to re-develop the Thames Estuary would be an environmental catastrophe, according to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). It found that there was a devastating impact on wildlife of the construction of a storm surge barrier across a Dutch estuary.

Mark Avery, director of conservation at the RSPB, and Roger Falconer, professor of Water Management at the Cardiff School of Engineering, examine the benefits and drawbacks of the proposals.
