Chancellor Alistair Darling has said that he is "confident but cautious" about prospects for the UK economy, adding that the priority is to secure growth, especially in the private sector.

Interviewed by Today presenter at the World Economic Forum in Davos he said that "getting that long-term growth is absolutely essential".

And he expressed support for the troubled Greek economy, adding "it's in everybody's interest within the European Union that they do sort out these problems because the European Union needs to make sure that all its members are in good health."
