Obesity surgery 'cost effective'

A surgeon specialising in treating morbidly obese people says that direct surgical intervention, including the fitting of gastric bands, is "cost effective".

Dr Peter Sedman told Today presenter John Humphrys that a million people in the UK might benefit from this sort of surgery and that research from Canada indicates that the cost, estimated at £5000 per patient, is recouped in three years.

His comments come after a report by the Royal College of Surgeons which claims that obese patients are being denied operations to cut their weight.

The report adds that says people who meet guidelines set by the health watchdog, Nice, are having to wait until they become even more obese before being offered surgical treatment
