The artwork for rock band Muse’s album The Resistance has been voted the best album sleeve of 2009.
The album was chosen in an online vote from a shortlist selected by industry insiders. The Manic Street Preachers came second.
Fever Ray’s self-titled album came third in a competition whose previous winners including the Fleet Foxes and Thom Yorke.
Much of the album artwork comes from top design studios, but the Massive Attack cover in fourth place was designed by band member 3D
And this cover, from the band Animal Collective, features an image created by Japanese psychology professor Akiyoshi Kitaoka.
Much of the artwork in the top ten adorns the albums of old hands in the music industy, such as this from US rock band Green Day...
... and this from UK band Depeche Mode.
The award hopes to "bring back to life" the golden age of artwork in the days of vinyl, says the award's founder Andrew Heeps.
"It is a way of celebrating some of the unsung heroes of the music industry," he says.
The Best Art Vinyl 2009 shortlist will feature in exhibitions at the Art Vinyl Gallery at Selfridges in London, the Snap Galleries in Birmingham, and the Georges House Gallery in Folkestone.
