Police can make 'substantial savings'

Police forces in England and Wales are to be told that they must make annual savings of more than £500m over the next five years.

The Home Office is proposing a range of cost-cutting measures - including a reduction in overtime and forces working together to buy vehicles and computer systems.

The Home Secretary Alan Johnson explained the proposed cost cutting measures on the Today programme.
