Speaking on the programme, Mr Fitzpatrick said that if he had known that the ceremony was segregated he would not have accepted the invitation.
The minister, who is also the MP for Poplar & Canning Town, added that the incident "perhaps demonstrates that there is a degree of intolerance, certainly exclusion rather than inclusion which we are trying to build in the East End. And certainly the vast number of my Muslim constituents who've contacted me have expressed sympathy that I was placed in this predicament".
