Climbing walls are a great way to start your children scaling heights in a friendly environment.

Many indoor centres run safe, structured sessions for children from 8+ and often have junior clubs at weekends and courses during the summer holidays.

Where's my nearest club?
The British Mountaineering Council website has search facilities to find your nearest club or climbing wall.

It also has a young members section, Gripped, with a Q&A page for frequently asked parental questions.

A great way to get the whole family out into the countryside!

Using a map and compass you must navigate a country course as quickly as possible.

There are courses across the country, many with special routes for kids.

What's in the kit bag?
You'll need a compass, map, outdoor clothes and decent walking shoes or boots.

Where's my nearest club?
The British Orienteering website is the best place to find contact details for your nearest club.

If splashing around in a lake or in a river sounds like fun then canoeing is the answer.

You can use a double bladed paddle, a single paddle, race, slalom and even surf in one.

What's in the kit bag?
A canoe, splash deck, paddle, wetsuit, lifejacket and helmet can amount to a lot of money so it's best to visit a canoe club first to try it out before splashing the cash.

Where's the nearest canoe club?
The British Canoe Union has a good website for finding your local club and has info on events geared towards kids.
