Are players at risk from exhaustion?
Around the Academy:

Patrick Vieira
Vieira has already raised concerns about overplaying
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is worried that his players may suffer from burnout as they face five matches in 13 days.

The Gunners' 2-2 draw with Chelsea on Saturday means they must now fit a replay into their congested schedule.

It has led to calls from Wenger for replays to be scrapped as he believes demands on players will be too great.

Wenger already has experience of coping with fatigued players after skipper Patrick Vieira complained of exhaustion earlier this season.

BBC Sport Academy asked top sports physio Bevan Ellis if he believed Vieira had a case to ask Wenger for a rest.

Vieira's plea to Wenger

I'm not tired, I'm burned out. This time I really need a breather.

I can hardly stand. My back aches, my legs hurt, it hurts all over.

I'm going to see Arsene Wenger. He must give me time off to relax.

Ellis on Vieira's defence

Vieira could well be suffering from overtraining.

Overtraining is when a player does excessive training over a long period without enough recovery time.

It can lead to a number of negative changes in your blood, hormones and your heart rate.

A combination of these problems can reduce your ability to perform quite considerably.

The fact he played so many games last season may well have left him extremely tired - especially because he never had a chance to recover properly in pre-season.

Wenger's opinion

I have no plans to rest him.

I believe he is in a different physical shape now and will continue to play him.

It was a post-match reaction. Patrick had a tough week.

Quite frankly, I expect a player to be dead after a game. I would find it shocking if a player wasn't tired after a game.

A player should be exhausted after a game - it means he gives everything and that is how Patrick is.

Ellis' prosecution

It is hard to say whether Vieira really is suffering from overtraining.

It certainly is possible that his tiredness could have come from last season.

Overtraining syndrome can take months to kick in - it can also take months to recover.

It is more likely to be overreaching which is the short term form of overtraining.

If it is overreaching then a week's rest will soon sort him out.

He played two games in four days, did a lot of travelling and trained on the days in between.

This is putting a lot of pressure on his body.

He also probably had a reduced pre-season schedule because of the World Cup.

No matter how much you train to be fit, it can never replace playing.

Ellis on how he would help Vieira

I would check him to see if he really is suffering from overreaching.

If he was, I would give him seven days rest.

I would check he is eating the right foods, drinking enough water and not pushing himself too much in training.

I would also check he is psychologically fit. This can have a big effect on your physical fitness.

After his seven days recovery I'm sure he would be raring to take on the Premiership's finest.
