You don't necessarily need to be a good player to be an umpire, but you do have to have sound knowledge of the game.

Put time into it and gain as much experience as possible. Be prepared to work at weekends and during holidays.

As an umpire you need to have a thick skin and be able to take on constructive criticism.

You need to be a team player. It's important to be able to work alongside other officials. Individuals don't survive for long on the circuit.

You've got to have a thick skin!

Concentration is vital. You have to have your mind on the game for long periods of time - often in hot weather.

Decisions have to be made in split seconds so you have to be able to remain cool under pressure.

Obviously you need to be in good health and good eyesight and hearing are absolutely crucial.

Oh, and a loud voice helps too!
