An out of this world performance
Some people would never let fashion get in the way of sporting success. Cathy Freeman may have looked as if she'd just stepped off another planet in her space age Swift Suit at the Sydney Olympics. But an out of this world performance in the 400m earned her a memorable gold medal. The all-in-one leotards made famous by the Australian athlete have also been worn by swimmers and speed skaters. Nike designers came up with ideas for the suit after carrying out experiments in windtunnels. It covers the entire body apart from the face, hands and feet but has netting on the back, shoulder and thighs which allows air to circulate The fabric is designed to allow athletes' arms to move over the body more efficiently. But there is still debate as to whether wearing the suit gives them an advantage.
