Kate Haywood is an expert record-breaker!
Swimmer Kate Haywood was named BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year on Sunday. The 16-year-old tells the Academy about her reactions after receiving the award from England rugby hero Jonny Wilkinson.
I'm still in shock - when they called my name out I thought "It's me!" It still hasn't sunk in yet. I only found out on the Thursday before I had been nominated for the top three. And then I'd only found out on the night before that I was coming to the awards because I had been at the European Short Course Championships in Dublin.
Unfortunately, I was ill last weekend and I didn't get to swim my main event, the 100m breaststroke. When my name was called out, I got up, walked over and saw it was Jonny Wilkinson presenting me with my award! This made me more nervous, I was shaking! I got loads of text messages from my friends who all said "You got to meet Jonny Wilkinson, that's not fair!" I was really hoping David Beckham would be at the awards because he's someone I really look up to, as well as being drop-dead gorgeous! But Jonny's here, so it's not all bad! Not many swimmers get noticed for their achievements, so hopefully it will show everyone that swimming is on its way up. And I also hope winning the award will make people notice me next year at The Olympics in Athens.
