How do I build up my stamina?
Around the Academy:

Do you have any drills that I could use to build up my stamina?

Ed, 15, York

Coach replies:

Hi Ed,

Drills are generally used to improve stroke technique.

Stamina is built up by doing continuous work which is mainly done as full strokes.

Having said that, if you get tired doing continuous full strokes, you can do drills so that you can continue to swim.

Try catch-up on front crawl.

This is when one arm pulls at a time.

When the arms get back to the front of the stroke and touches the opposite hand, the opposite hand can start.

You can also try the double arm backstroke.

This is when both arms go round simultaneously.
