A lift to the top
Around the Academy:

By now I can lift one-and-a-half times my own weight!

There are two types of lift - the clean and jerk and snatch. I'll be competing in the 58kg category.

In the clean and jerk you lift the weights from the floor to your shoulders then over your head, while in the snatch it's all done in one continuous move.

I train three or four hours a day, six days a week. And it all has to fit in around my job as a PE teacher.

The focus of every session is mainly lifting although the emphasis will vary.

Leg strength is really important so I do a lot of squats. I also work on core stability to keep my body strong.

Diet and nutrition are also important. Ideally you train just above your weight category.

You need a lot of protein to help rebuild muscles.

Then in the last few weeks before a competition you have to cut back on the calories.

It can be a bit of a pain - especially when it means my favourite food - ice cream - is off the menu!
