The sport In slalom, competitors must negotiate 25 gates through a turbulent 300m-500m course. If a competitor touches a gate they incur five penalty points. The winner has the best combination of fastest time and lowest or no penalty points.
Equipment Canadian canoes can be used for both flat water and slalom racing, and are paddled from a kneeling position using a single-bladed paddle. Kayaks are propelled from a seated position, using a long, double-bladed paddle. They also have a rudder for flat water racing.
