The speed kings of the baize
Around the Academy:

The Academy investigates the quickest players on the baize

How long do you take between your snooker shots?

There are 22 balls (on a full size table) and six holes. And you pot them in some sort of order. Easy isn't it?

Not only are some of the World Championship players making it look very easy, they get racing round the table as well.

But you can forget the likes of Alex 'Hurricane' Higgins, Jimmy 'Whirlwind' White and 'Rocket' Ronnie O'Sullivan.

They are mere breezes of the wind compared with Tony 'Tornado' Drago.

The Academy got out their windometers and stopwatches and can reveal that Malta's cue master takes on average between 11 and 14 seconds per shot.

Drago also holds the record for winning the fastest ever snooker frame - an unbelievable three minutes.

Other records include winning a match 5-0 in 38 minutes and he rounded up a 9-0 whitewash in just 81 minutes.

This boy does not hang around.

'Rocket' Ronnie just trails in his wake with an average time between shots of between 12 and 14 seconds.

Even Jimmy White - the so-called 'Whirlwind' - is made to look an aged rambler in comparison with a time of between 15 and 22 seconds.

But if you're taking a bit longer than these boys then fear not - you're in good company.

The tortoise of the baize is the current champion of the world.

Peter Ebdon is defending his world crown at the Crucible by plodding around the table, taking well over 30 seconds per shot.

But whether you're blowing a gale, or you've got a large shell on your back, one very important thing remains.

You still need to pot those balls.
