Get the lowdown on judo
The 'gentle way' isn't always that gentle
Judo means "the gentle way", but anyone who's played or watched the sport will tell you that's not always the case!

If you fancy a crack as this hugely popular martial art, here's our guide to getting involved.

The sport
Judo is a grappling sport in which two opponents try to defeat each other using recognised judo moves and holds.

The first contestant, or 'judoka', to score one point by throwing, holding or immobilising their opponent wins the match.

The move must either make their opponent submit, or immobilise them for a specified period of time.

An opponent submits to a hold by tapping twice on the mat with a hand or foot.

Equipment
Judo is played on a floor area called tatami, which covers an area of 14m sq.

Judoka wear loose fitting uniforms called 'judogi', made up of trousers, a jacket and belt tied at the waist.

The colour of the belt depends on the grade of the competitor. The highest grade is black belt.
