What is the International Rules series?
Around the Academy:

The Gaelic footballers of Ireland are ready to take on the Australian Rules players
The games are always no holds barred affairs

If you think that the rivalry between England and Australia in rugby and cricket is intense you've seen nothing yet.

When the Gaelic footballers of Ireland take on the Australian Rules men from Down Under the sparks really fly.

Since the series started in 1984 the games in the International Rules - or Compromised Rules - have always been competitive.

Too competitive sometimes. Some of the games ended up as pitched battles and the series was suspended in 1987.

It briefly came back in 1990 for one year only to be abandoned completely.

Passions had cooled by 1998 and the series was restored. The fighting hasn't returned, but the competitiveness has.

Every game is played with intense passion, but most tempers are now kept in check and the entertainment value is just as high as ever.

The teams meet in two games at the end of October with the aggregate points determining the winner.
