Nicole is determined to be the best in the world
Nicole Cooke has been destined for cycling stardom ever since she discarded her stabilisers! As a junior the hugely talented Welsh rider won virtually every British title possible. She rewrote the record books by scooping four Junior World titles in a year - the road race twice, the time trial, and mountain biking.
Nicole was unable to compete at the Olympics in Sydney because she was too young. But she proved she could mix it with the best by scooping her first World Championship title the same year. And now there's just no holding her back!
In her first senior season she won six continental races and took the road race title at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester. Last year she became the first British rider to win the World Cup and she also added the prestigious BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year Award 2003 to her growing list of achievements. No doubt about the highlight of Nicole'scareer so far though - winning the Giro d'Italia. Along with the women's Tour de France, it's one of the most gruelling cycling events on the planet. It didn't all go to plan at the Athens Olympics but at just 21-years-old Nicole has plenty more chances to go for gold!
