Virenque has won the distinctive jersey six times
The winner of this jersey is known as the 'King of the Mountains' and it is awarded to the best climber in the race. The leader of the competition wears the distinctive polka-dot jersey each day. Points are awarded for position to the top of climbs, both along the route and at summit finishes.
Ascents are graded according to length, gradient and position in the stage. Climbs are rated 4 (easiest),3,2,1 and hors categorie(unclassifiably hard!). A medium climb will get a tougher rating if it comes towards the end of the stage rather than at the start. French hero Richard Virenque broke the record for most wins when he collected his seventh mountain prize at the end of the 2004 Tour. 2004 polka-dot jersey winner: Richard Virenque.
