Badminton banter explained
Around the Academy:

Any idea what a bird has to do with badminton?

Like any sport badminton has the odd phrase or two to confuse us all.

In our latest jargon guide, we unscramble some common badminton babble to help you on and off the court.

ALLEY
The extension of the court by one-and-a-half feet on either side. The alleys are only used during doubles play.

BASE POSITION
A central point on the court where a singles player aims to return to after every shot. Badminton's a tiring business you know.

BIRD
So this is where birds come in to play! Another name for a shuttlecock, thanks to the feathers which are used to make them.

BLOCK
Don't swing that racquet! A block shot is just that. Usually played from near the net, your aim - to stop the shuttle passing you.

CARRY
Try to avoid this. Why? It's illegal! A carry is when you 'scoop' the shuttle rather than hit it. This is also known as a "throw".

CLEAR
You have to hit this shot high and deep into your opponent's court. It can be used as a defensive and attacking shot.

DRIVE
No transport involved. Instead it's a hard and fast shot that's hit low over the net. Your opponent will struggle to return it too!

HAIRPIN SHOT
Another shot, another crazy name. Hit the shot low and close to the net. It should just clear the net and drop quickly on the other side.

LET
An official stoppage made by the umpire during play. If a let is called, the point is replayed. You've been warned so be prepared.

NET SHOT
This shot is similar to the hairpin shot, but the shuttle is hit from the forecourt and not quite as close to the net. Master it, and you're well away.

RALLY
Forget Colin McRae and think a series of shots resulting in a point being scored. The more you win the merrier!

SHUTTLECOCK
Also known as a bird or shuttle. They're either made from plastic or feathers. These are the choice of pros, but plastic work just as well - and last longer!

SMASH
A smash, usually hit from near the net that cannot be returned by you opponent. Point to you - no question!

WOOD SHOT
If the base of the shuttle hits the frame of your racquet you've hit a wood shot. This shot was only made legal in 1963 so consider yourself lucky!
