Tackle hard with Gary Longwell
Around the Academy:

Hi, I'm Gary Longwell and I'm a second-row, or lock forward, for Ulster.

Tackling is a very important part of my game and I am going to show you the basic principles of the tackle.

Watch my masterclass

For around 50% of the game a team will be defending, possibly more depending on the opposition.

It is therefore vitally important that the tackling is right, otherwise the defence will not hold up and your team will concede a lot of points.

After watching my masterclass hopefully you will become a better tackler and that in turn will help your team.

Tough tackler

The three key points of the tackle are hit, wrap and drive. Hit the man, wrap the ball to prevent the offload and drive the player back.

Did you know?
Gary is the first - and so far only - player to chalk up 100 Ulster appearances.
