Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera celebrate in style!
The Six Nations may be over - but it was the turn of Wales' schoolboy stars to take centre stage this week. The Coca Cola Under 14s Dragon's Cup final was held at the Millennium Stadium on Thursday, with Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera running out narrow 19-12 winners over derby rivals Dwr y Felin. And it was a case of Iestyn Harris step aside, as Ystalyfera's star centre Kristian Phillips turned on a one-man show!
He bagged all his team's points, running over for a hat-trick of tries and kicking two conversions. The Dragon's Cup is the showpiece event for school sides in Wales. Around 200 teams from across the country took part in the initial stages.
The teams were spurred on after being given motivational talks by Wales internationals Ben Evans, Tom Shanklin and Mefin Davies. For proud new champions Ystalyfera it was a chance to make up for the misery of missing out to Whitchurch High School in last season's final.
But they were made to fight tooth and nail by dogged Dwr y Felin who piled on the pressure in the second-half. Their points came courtesy of tries from Gavin Jones and Laurie Hanlon with Jack Morgan slotting over a conversion. Fancy the chance of following in your heroes footseps and playing at the Millennium Stadium like Ystalyfera and Dwr y Felin did? Why not enter your school team in next season's competition?
