Could you be a whistle-blower?

Leading Welsh referee Nigel Whitehouse
Do you know your rucks from your mauls?

Reckon you've got what it takes to be a rugby referee?

The Welsh Rugby Union has recently launched a drive to recruit more referees.

What's more, the scheme has been given financial backing by the Sports Council for Wales.

So there couldn't be a better time to get trained up.

The WRU's aim is to train up 880 new referees on its Level One award before March next year.

The course comprises theory and practice sessions as well as a test on the laws of the game.

Once qualified, new recruits then undergo assessment and mentoring from the WRU's team of senior referees.

WRU chief executive David Moffett said: "Everyone loves to hate the referee, but we all know we simply can't do without them.

"Referees are vital, If you don't have a man in the middle with a whistle, you don't have a game," he added.

For more information about the scheme, contact the WRU's new director of referees Rob Yeman on 029 2082 2421.
