Ben's scrummaging secrets! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||

A lot of mind games go on between front row forwards. Sometimes the players eyeball each other like boxers! And you can probably expect a clash of heads every now and again. It's all about intimidating the other pack. The aim is to try and impose the physicality of your scrum on the opposition. If you can demoralise them in any way, you can get the upper hand. But while you may not want to play with a smile on your face, always remember to play with a smile inside. After all it's just 15 players against 15 players, a rugby ball and a referee. Play with plenty of confidence, and above all enjoy it!
Rugby wasn't a professional sport when I was growing up, but I still wanted to be a top class player. A lot of my friends didn't make it, but I stuck to it. I learnt to be quite resilient. If you're prepared to work hard, you can still find time to do all the fun things. Remember rugby's not always going to be there for you, so make sure you work hard at school too. I've got a sports science degree to fall back on once my rugby days are over. It's all about finding the right balance.
