A fearsome opponent
All Black centre Tana Umaga is one of the most recognisable players in world rugby. The New Zealand captain is among the game's most feared attackers. He's also one of the toughest tacklers. It's fair to say no-one relishes lining up against THIS guy! Here Tana talks about how he got started in rugby and what makes being an All Black so special.
My earliest rugby memory is going along to the shops with my mum and dad to buy my first pair of boots. They were high cut with a silver fern on the side. I guess that was the first time I'd got close to the silver fern.
At primary school most of my friends played soccer, but my dad wouldn't let me. He made me play rugby instead. I started playing when I was seven. We lived just over the back from the local club's fields and at the time my brother was playing for the seniors. I still talk to my brother a lot because he's played at that level so he knows all about it.
