So, just how do you stop Jonah Lomu?
The worst case scenario for a full-back is when the opposition wing breaks through and it's up to you to pull off that try-saving tackle. Imagine going one-on-one with Jonah Lomu, for example! I've done it a couple of times and believe me it's not an enjoyable experience. But you're the last line of defence and you've got to be able to cope with everything that's thrown at you.
Former French full-back Serge Blanco was the master of turning defence into attack. He was one of my heroes when I was growing up. Back then France used to win Grand Slams left, right and centre and I used to love watching Blanco play. He had fantastic flair.
I've played quite a few positions in the back division during my career although most of my senior rugby has been played at full-back. I think it's given me a good insight into how the players around me feel. That would be my top tip for any young back line player. Spread yourself about, try playing different positions and after a while you'll know which suits you best. And whichever position you end up playing, remember to have fun and enjoy it.
