![]() Billy (right) in action for Wales
We caught up with Welsh netball star Ursula "Billy" Bowers to find out why you don't have to be tall to play netball!
I play a wide range of positions on the court - anything from keeper to defender. People often think that netballers, and in particular defenders, need to be tall. I don't think that's necessarily true. New Zealand and Australia - the two best teams in the world - have players who aren't that tall, but it doesn't seem to be a problem for them. The best netballers are very fit and have good strength. The game is becoming more physical at the highest level so you need to be strong to hold your own on court. Of course, the more you play game the better you become - and when you're young the most important thing is to have fun!
England's strength is partly down to their huge player base, but they also have some excellent systems in place to make sure talented young stars get spotted early. Wales are working on similar ways of developing players at primary and secondary school, and making sure more of them keep playing the game after they leave. I think that's a big problem - it's really important to get people to join clubs outside of school. I would definitely encourage as many people as possible to play netball - both in and out of school. It's such an enjoyable sport and you make loads of new friends. There are loads of clubs out there - it's just a case of letting people know about them!
