The PGA diploma | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Tom has one more year to go on the diploma
What's the training programme like? A lot of the course is self taught. You get sent the work by the PGA but they are always on hand to help you. There's all sorts of stuff from how to build a golf club through to psychology and biomechanics. The course is hard but most people are good golfers so they know about the swing and equipment. But the business side can be a struggle. And there's the science and psychology side of things because there are a lot of theories involved. It seems like I've been thinking about exams and coursework for ever. I've done six years in education since leaving school!
On your day off when you've got work to do it can be awful. But when you qualify you can earn a lot of money and it's only three years. The best thing about the course has been teaching the swing to people and I like the psychology side of things. I'm doing all right this year and I've got distinctions so far. We've got final exams at the end of 2004. They involve written exams and also practical stuff like golf club repair, swing exams and giving a lesson to a member of the public.
