Rain casued chaos at this year's event
What makes a good greenkeeper?
Being physically able is the big one because there is a lot of lifting and walking in the job. A knowledge of the game is necessary to appreciate how the course should be from a playing point of view.
Does your routine change when something like an Open Championship comes along? My day lasts from 7am until 4pm, but obviously I will work later during the hectic build up to The Open. If anything I rely more on my staff to deal with problems on the course. This saves me from trying to be in two places at once.
Did you do anything to make the course 'Tiger Proof'? No. The course is quite short anyway - 7,032 yards, compared to over 7,200 yards on other 'major' courses. This should allow more players to compete evenly.
If the wind is strong and the rough challenging, then you will need to be more than a big hitter.
What advice can you give someone interested in a career in greenkeeping? Get yourself some more information by writing to the greenkeeper or club secretary of your local golf club.
