Hamstring stretch

This stretch should prevent you from pulling your hamstring during a game.

Watch my stretch tips in video

Your hamstrings are the muscles in the back of your upper leg.

Michael Owen's football career has been riddled with hamstring problems and you will often see him doing this stretch before a game.

Here are my three tips to this stretch:

  • Lie on your back with your legs bent

  • Lift your left leg into the air and extend it almost vertically. If you cannot lift it straight up then go as high as you can until you feel a tension in your hamstrings

  • Use your hands to hold your leg in that position, placing them just below the back of your knee

Try tightening your quads as you do this stretch to reduce the tension in your hamstrings
