Find out who does what on the field of play
We've got your number!

A hockey team is made up of a squad of 16 players.

At any one time, 11 players including the goalkeeper are allowed on the pitch.

The way the players arrange themselves depends on the system of play used by the team.

This is known as the formation.

The system a team uses can be either attacking or defensive and can be dictated by a number of factors such as:

  • The strength and weaknesses of the players in the squad.

  • The strengths and weaknesses of the opposition

  • The nature of the occasion

For example, if a team knows they are facing a midfield battle, they can increase their chances of success by sacrificing a forward in order to introduce an extra midfielder.

The best teams can adapt from one system to another during free play to suit the needs of the game in progress.

Click around the links on the right to find out more about each position.
