Padraig takes you for a spin
Around the Academy:

It's one of the most frequently asked questions in golf.

How do you get backspin?

Well ask no more all you golf fans, because Padraig Harrington has the answer!

Watch Padraig's backspin masterclass

It's not easy, but it's an important skill to learn. And if you get it right, your mates will be seriously impressed!

Here are Padraig's top tips for getting backspin on your ball:

  • Use a high quality golf ball - the old one you found in your Grandad's shed simply won't spin

  • Keep those clubs clean! The grooves in your club head give the ball its spin. If they're dirty you've got no chance

  • You need to have a decent lie to start with. If you're stuck in the rough you won't get a clean contact - and without that the ball won't spin

  • Check the conditions - if you're hitting into a breeze and on to a slightly soft green you've got more chance of getting that spin
