Nick shows his son Matthew (right) how it's done
I took up golf when I was 14 years old which is later than many great players. I'd tried everything at school and then I watched Jack Nicklaus win Masters tournament on TV and was hooked. I was sportsman looking for a sport - and at last I'd found it. I went down to my local club at Welwyn Garden City the next day and booked six lessons and never looked back. It can be an advantage to start younger but not necessarily. Kids should play for fun. It makes sense to get someone to show you the basics grip and posture as there no point in doing it completely wrong for six years. I'd say most kids click into it about 12-14 years. My son is a good example - he was not really interested in asking me questions until he got to about 13. (Matthew Faldo plays to a handicap of about 18).
