How can I get backspin on the ball to stop it running on?
Around the Academy:

I can get it up in the air but can't control the bounce on the green.

Can you help me?

Mervyn Weston, Surbiton

Coach replies:

Mervyn, you need more backspin!

When you hit a golf ball you naturally set it spinning backwards (not forwards as you might think) as it flies through the air.

Good players try to increase the amount of backspin for short shots as this is what makes the ball stop on the green.

This is known as 'bite' as the ball seems to bite into the green and stop quickly.

The way to make a ball 'bite' is to concentrate on hitting hit the ball before you hit the ground.

Visualise yourself hitting down through the back of the ball. It's crucial to accelerate the club into the shot as you do this.

This will impart backspin which will make the ball check when it hits the green and give you more control.

You won't be able to play this out of thick rough as the grass will get in the way of the contact between club and ball.
