I'm John Motson and I've been a football commentator on television and radio at the BBC for over 30 years now.

There are four key points to any good commentary.

Preparation
Interpretation
Pronunciation
Animation

The commentator must get excitement, passion and enthusiasm into their voice so that the viewer at home can get into a game and enjoy it to the full.

Aged 18: Joined Barnet Press newspaper as junior reporter
Aged 21: Joined BBC Radio Sheffield
Aged 22: Joined network radio
Aged 25: Joined Match of the Day team
Between 1979 and 1994: Motty commentated on 29 consecutive major cup finals
