This formation is not as confusing as it looks.
Who said football was like a game of chess? It's simple. It's having someone playing just behind the main striker but ahead of the midfield. Paul Scholes has done it a lot for Man Utd. This player is dropped between the opposition midfield and defence and will get more time and space on the ball. And hopefully be in a position to create more goalscoring chances.
