The Netherlands is the final hurdle for Scotland

Here are a few more fascinating Dutch facts.

1.Almost 20% of the total area of the Netherlands is under water.

The country's name reflects the Dutch people's efforts to reclaim land.

2. The Netherlands has produced many of the world's most famous artists from Rembrandt, Frans Hals and Vermeer in the 17th century to Van Gogh in the 19th and Mondrian in the 20th.

3. The Netherlands is the most densely populated country in Europe.

It is only slightly smaller than Scotland but has more than three times the population!

4. Anne Frank wrote her famous diary during the Second World War in hiding from the Germans in a house in Amsterdam.

5. All together now: "When it's Spring again, I'll bring again, Tulips from Amsterdam!"

Tulips don't originally come from Amsterdam!
"When it's spring again..."

Everyone knows the song and although we associate tulips with the Netherlands both the flower and it's name originated in the Middle East.

So tulips don't come from Amsterdam after all!

6. Like Great Britain, the Netherlands is a constitutional monarchy - which means that they have a Queen (Beatrix), who is head of state, and a Prime Minister, Jan Peter Balkenende.

7. Hollywood star Famke Janssen is probably the Netherlands's best known actress.

She shot to fame in 1995 opposite Pierce Brosnan playing Bond girl Xenia Onatopp in "Goldeneye".

8. If you're eating out in a group it is common to split the bill.

Scotland would stand a better chance if the Dutch team played in their national footwear!
If only the Dutch team played in clogs!

But don't suggest "going Dutch" - which means to pay your own way on a date or in a restaurant - as the expression is unknown in the Netherlands.

9. Other common English expressions using the word Dutch include:

  • Dutch door: a door divided into two parts horizontally, arranged so that the bottom part can be shut while the upper part remains open.

  • Double Dutch - Used to describe when someone is talking gibberish. It can also means a game of skipping in which players jump over two ropes swung in crisscross formation by two turners.

A canal in the Dutch capital, Amsterdam
Amsterdam is also renowned for it's canals

  • Dutch auction - an auction in which an item is initially offered at a high price that is progressively lowered until a bid is made and the item sold.

  • Dutch concert - a so-called concert in which all the singers sing different songs at the same time!

But remember if you try to use these phrases in the Netherlands you'll only be met with a puzzled look and a shrug of the shoulders!

Former Dutch supermodel Karen Mulder has a tulip named after her. Maybe Scotland could name a thistle after Naomi Campbell - she can be a wee bit prickly!
