Lithuania's basketball team came third in the last Olympics
Lithuanians love a good game of hoops!
Check out these lovely Lithuania facts.

1. Lithuania is one of the three countries that make up the Baltic States - the others are Estonia and Latvia.

2. In the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Lithuania won the Basketball bronze medal. The sport is one of the country's most popular, along with football.

3. The mother of Pope John Paul II was of Lithuanian descent. The majority of Lithuania's three million population are Roman Catholics.

4. Mindaugas was the first and only King of Lithuania. He was crowned by the Pope and reigned between 1253-1263.

5. Every five years, the country holds a National Song Festival, where over 100,000 people join in with several hundred choirs from the Baltic region.

6. There are only a few hours of daylight each day between November and March.

7. Lithuania has a strong folk-art tradition of wood carving.

Large crosses, suns, weathercocks or figures of saints are placed at crossroads, village squares or at the sites of extraordinary events.

8. In Lithuania, the Oak tree is seen as a symbol of long life and strength.
