Stepney enjoyed a 12-year career at Old Trafford
Alex Stepney was one of the greatest goalkeepers of his generation. He will be forever remembered for a superb save that was instrumental in Manchester United's European Cup win in 1968. Here he shares some of his top tips with the Academy so YOU can follow in his footsteps.
I started out by playing for my school team, then I was selected to play for my district side. That led to me being picked for Surrey boys and London boys. But I always seemed to be reserve for London and Surrey. However, I persevered as all I wanted to do was play football. So I carried on playing on Saturdays and Sundays - as much as I could really. Later, I played amateur football for a local team called Tooting & Mitcham. There I made my way through the ranks, from the youth team to the first team.
I went on to make over 500 appearances for United and kept 175 clean sheets. In my career I won the European Cup, the League Championship and the FA Cup. I even managed to score two penalties for United in 1973! So, I would say to any aspiring shot stoppers out there, keep at it and don't give up! Click the buttons at the top right for Alex's top tips and read how his save was crucial to United's European Cup success.
