Making the grade at Man United
Around the Academy:

Neville, Scholes and Beckham all came through together
Gary, Scholes and Beckham have earnt rewards
Most don't make it (Age 16-20)

Much is made of the vast amounts of money that Premiership stars earn, but as Gary recalls that has not always been the case.

Watch part two of Gary's story

He was paid just £29.50 a week for his first two seasons at Old Trafford but was one of the lucky ones that would go on to reap the benefits.

"Three of every four lads that come into the game at the age of 16 are out of the game by 20.

"Every one of the four that makes it deserves the rewards because of the risks that you have taken. You miss out on a couple of years of education.

"You're behind while people of your age are doing A-levels, are better qualified or already have a trade behind them.

"That's why I think those players that make it deserve the rewards.

"There are a lot of players in the second and third divisions that still have to work very hard after they finish at about 35."
