Bowling basics with Matthew Hoggard
Around the Academy:

Matthew Hoggard in action for England
Hi, I'm Matthew Hoggard and I'm going to show you the skills of a fast bowler.

Before you start picking up the speed, you need to get the basics right.

Watch my masterclass:

Here are a few tips:

  • Grip: Place your first two fingers either side of the seam with your thumb at the bottom to try to land the seam as straight as possible

  • Run-up: Use a tape measure to mark your run-up out accurately from the back line of the crease

  • Line and length: Try to pitch the ball in the "corridor of uncertainty" outside the batsman's off stump, on a length where they are unsure whether to play back or forward

Now you've learned the basics, get out in the nets and put the practice in
